Local History
The images on this page were taken around the greater Perryopolis Area, some time in the
1920's and 30's. These images were scanned from either from prints made from glass
plates, or from the glass plates themselves! Reprints are available for purchase, please
contact the studio for information. Images are courtesy of Craig Martin & Ruthie Shields,
and are used with permission. (Also note that the images here have been reduced in
resolution to load faster on the web, printed images are much sharper.)
The images above were made on or near the
tunnel and bridge, located just outside of
Layton, PA. Both are still in use today,
although for vehicular traffic instead of trains.
These two are the coke ovens that were
located in Star Junction, PA, very few of which
remain today.
The old Perry Water Authority
water tower, also no longer here.
View of Perryoopolis from the hill
above the Greek Catholic Church.
View of Independence Street,
notice the style of dress on the lady
in the lower left of the image.
Circle in the center of town
All of the images above were made from prints made from glass plates, some of which were in very poor shape. The image below
was made from a glass plate itself, the difference is apparent! I hope to be able to have the opportunity to redo the above images
from the original plates if at all possible. In the below image, (which I believe is also Independence Street) the photographer used a
very long exposure time, hence the dark blur that appears in the center of the street ~ a car moved thru his image!
